VISITING TOFINO?

Black Bear Viewing in Tofino, BC

There aren't any grizzlies here, mate!

People rarely think of Tofino, BC as a place for bears. There's no grizzlies (brown bears) on Vancouver Island, but there are a whole bunch 'O black bears!

The bears here are best viewed from the safe distance of a boat. For this reason, most whale watching outfits in Tofino offer various bear watching packages. There are great opportunities for photos, and expect to see lots of other wildlife on your trip. Most bear watching trips have sightings, and at the very least you'll have a most excellent boat trip around the calm waters of Clayoquot Sound.

The best time of year for bear watching is June through September when weather is predictable. This time of year the bears are stuffing themselves on the beach buffet and berries. Go at low tide, when the bears find their fill of small crabs. During high tides the bears are more likely to be off knoking over huckleberry and salmonberry bushes on the edges of clearings.

Trophy bear hunting in BC has become a real problem in the last few years, and will only get worse if we don't take action and vote in a more responsible government. Idiots (to put it politely) come from all over the world to British Columbia (including Vancouver Island, BC) to kill off the few remaining megafauna that this continent has. Why? To mount a head on an office wall. To put a bear-skinned rug down by the fireplace. To help ease the pain of their unhappiness. Morons.
