VISITING TOFINO?

SCUBA Diving the Waters of Tofino, BC

¿Can you say shrinkage?

Are you nuts? (Ok that was a bit of a pun.) Yes, the water here is cold. But the water around Tofino, BC is also really clear and full of life and diverse oceanscapes. All of this makes Tofino a well kept secret in the cold-water diving world.

There are a few companies in Tofino that offer SCUBA diving charters. You'll want to rent or bring a dry suit along with your standard diving gear. You can expect to see everything from giant seastars to underwater forests of bull kelp.

The water currents in some areas of Clayoquot Sound can be intimidating, so do your tides and currents research before you go for a dive on your own.

You can get diving supplies, fill your tanks and buy fishing licenses and choclate bars at "Whity's" or Method Marine Supply and Fuel Dock, which is locate in between 4th St. Dock and 1st St Dock. Access by vehicle is off Main St.

Please! There are a few northern abalone left in the world, so don't take any during your dive. Now that the sea otters are making a comeback, abalone is going to have a real tough time. We're lucky to have these two endangered species -- we messed their population up, and we might just have the power to maybe help these peaceful gastropods and Mustelids thrive again. Let me put it another way: DON'T HUNT TOFINO'S ABALONE. IT'S ILLEGAL AND A MORAL OUTRAGE. YOU WILL BE FINED. YOUR PRIVATE PARTS MAY FALL OFF. They are watching.
