Seakayaking around TofinoDude, Seakayaking was practically born in BCPoor sea kayakers. With the outlandishly fast growth of surfing in Tofino, sometimes sea kayaking seems to be standing against the wall of the high school dance. But they're still out paddling around The upside to this downturn or stagnation in popularity is that, unlike surfing, seakayakers no longer have to paddle around all the newcomers. But this doesn't mean that the beaches are empty. Au contraire, mon frère. We've said it before: LOTS of people visiting Tofino and Coastal BC. And a lot of them are bringing sea kayaks. And some of these people actually take their sea kayaks off the roof of their car. If you're planning on going seakayaking without an organized trip and professional guide, we strongly suggest that you spend some serious time planning. Even the most seasoned sea kayakers get had their @ss whooped by an unexpected Southeast storm. I actually rescued two kayakers who were stuck in one of Tofino's gnarly storms. Not fun for anyone involved, and an accident that could have been avoided by better planning. Those two boneheads are lucky to be alive. Camping on most of the beaches around Clayoquot Sound is ok, but there are some private lands and lands that are sensitive First Nation's areas. Please consult with local officials before you start your seakayaking trip if you are planning to leave Tofino for an overnight adventure.
