Tofino's Beaches:FAQsWhat beach has the nicest sunset? Seriously: take your pick. All of Tofino's beaches face west in some fashion. In the summer months, look for a beach that faces more southwest, and in the winter, you want to look more northwest. So in the summer months, Tonquin Beach will be spectacular. In the winter months, just be happy that you're seeing the sun [smile].What beach has the best beachcombing? We get this question all the time. Probably the best beaches for beachcombing is where there are legal issues with the hobby - meaning in Pacific Rim National Park. Cox Bay can turn up some great stuff in the winter months, but all of the beaches are interesting in their own special way.Can I have a fire on the beach? Yes. As long as there isn't a fire ban according to the District of Tofino. Watch for signs that say so in the summer months. It's best to bring your own firewood (the Esso gas station sells bundles of firewood and kindling). Is parking free at all of the beaches around Tofino? As of this writing (January, 2006) parking at all of the beaches outside of Pacific Rim National Park is free. Tofino is possibly planning on implementing pay parking at some of the beaches around the district. The park charges by the hour, day or season. You can buy hourly and daily passes at the pay machines located in the park's parking lots. Are we allowed to drink alcohol on the beach? Open alcohol is not permitted on the beaches. Should I clean up after my dog when I walk the beach? This is a controversial topic for some folks. The beaches used to be so remote and little used, that dog poop wasn't a big deal. These days it seems like there are more dogs at Chesterman's Beach than people. The District of Tofino really should put up clean up bags at each of the beach's parking lots, but that is likely a long way off (Tofino has bigger things to worry about, like water shortages and proper sewage treatment). In short, we recommend scooping the poop. What's the best beach in Tofino? Our favorite is Wreck Bay, but that's not the official name, so the fun for you will be finding it! How do I get to Cox Bay? Head out of town, past Chesterman's Beach Road. After Long Beach Lodge Resort and the Tofino Chamber of Commerce, look right for Maltby Road. Turn on Maltby and go to the "T" at the end. Turn left into the parking lot and follow the trail down to the beach. More public access is planned for Cox Bay, but it is not available as of this writing (January, 2006). |
